ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that the government is investigating whether Swat Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah is in the tribal areas or Afghanistan.
Talking to journalists here on Wednesday, he said terrorists were using the Bajaur-Kunar border for moving between the two countries.
He said Fazlullah had used an Afghan phone number, but there was a possibility that he was not in Afghanistan.
The minister said the Afghan government would be requested to help arrest Fazlullah if he was in Afghanistan. He said the government was fully supporting Afghanistan in fighting terrorism.
Taliban are killing innocent people at the behest of their masters who wanted to destabilise the country through terrorism, the minister said. ‘We stand united in the war on terror and we have no other option but to defeat terrorists.’
Mr Malik said the nation stood behind the security forces to defeat terrorism and steps like computerisation of criminals’ data would help achieve the objective.
In reply to a question, he said the government had rejected a recent report of the Transparency International and the prime minister had constituted a committee to investigate it. He said the government had strong objections over the parameters of the survey on which the report was based. Such reports not only harmed the reputation of the country, but also hampered investment, he said.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated an e-enablement system linking all police stations of the capital.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Malik said computerisaion of FIRs and other records would boost the efficiency of police and facilitate people in filing complaints.
He said all details of terrorists and other criminals would be available at every police station in Islamabad and the system would later be replicated across the country.
Mr Malik said the government was also reviewing the FIR’s format which was 100 years old.
Under new amendments to laws, people could register FIRs without any delay and hurdles, he added.
